Sexual dysfunction is a complex physiological process. The regular sexual function depends on the multiple systems of the human body, including the nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system and reproductive system. Additionally, you should have a good mental state and physical health. Otherwise, it will affect your normal sexual life.

Sexual dysfunction is a sexual disorder often manifested as low or no response to physical pleasure, desire, preference, arousal or orgasm.

Male sexual dysfunction mainly includes sexual desire disorders, erectile dysfunction and ejaculation disorder and premature ejaculation. On the other hand, female sexual dysfunction includes orgasm disorders, post-orgasmic diseases, pelvic floor dysfunction, sexual arousal disorders and sexual pain disorders.

Sexual dysfunction causes

The causes of sexual dysfunction mainly divided into three categories: biological factors, mental and psychological factors, and cultural factors.

Biological factor

  • Sexual dysfunction occurs due to excessive alcohol consumption, use of nicotine, stimulants, narcotics, antihistamines antihypertensives and certain psychotherapeutic drugs.
    Other factors that cause sexual dysfunction are genetic variation, hormonal deficiencies (low testosterone, other androgens, or estrogen), age and health status. Disease such as endocrine disorders (thyroid, pituitary, or adrenal gland problems), neuropsychiatric disorders, genital lesions.

Psychological factors

  • Psychological factors that cause sexual dysfunctions are the environment, the influence of past sexual experience, wrong sexual concept, stress and negative emotions caused by various external factors.

Cultural factors

  • Due to the influence of religious and cultural backgrounds, some people have a prejudice against sex, that the sexual intercourse will lose weight, and subjectively abandon or reduce sexual activity, it is easy to cause sexual repression.

Sexual desire disorders

Premature ejaculation
Ejaculation occurs before the partner achieves orgasm. It occurs quickly after insertion of the penis.

Orgasm disorder
After continuous sexual stimulation and sexual arousal, it’s difficult or delayed to achieve orgasm continuously or repeatedly.

Sexual pain disorders
Vaginal pain during repeated sexual intercourse), vaginal fistula (repetitive or persistent vaginal smooth muscle involuntary spasmodic contraction, interference with penile insertion).

Treatment

Patients with sexual dysfunction need to adopt an integrated approach and should actively treat the disease. The drug-induced patients should stop using the drug.

Drug treatment
For the treatment of erectile dysfunction, PDE5 inhibitors are preferred, such as sildenafil, vardenafil, and tadalafil. Oral levodopa, ephedrine have the effect of promoting ejaculation.
Estrogen replacement therapy can increase libido and reduces painful sexual intercourse

Sexual behaviour therapy
It includes sex concentration training which helps to improve the patient’s sexual life. It also reduces anxiety and fear of sexual intercourse. 

Sex education and psychotherapy
Strengthen sexual knowledge, eliminate fears about sexual problems and sexual intercourse, try to build good coordination with your partner. 

Psychotherapy emphasises individualised treatment options, such as psychoanalysis, aversion therapy and systematic desensitisation.

Prevention

Both men and women should eliminate stress and anxiety, and relieve the psychological burden. Before the sexual intercourse, you should exchange feelings with each other, and touching each others body. During the process of sexual intercourse, the man must be gentle. Avoid using drugs that can cause sexual dysfunction.
